Cleaning and Care Guide for Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a durable, rust-resistant material. However, to maintain its long-lasting and beautiful appearance, regular cleaning and care are essential. Different types of stains on stainless steel surfaces may require specific cleaning methods. Generally available cleaning products can be used effectively. Here is a detailed guide on how to clean each type of stain.

Stainless Steel Care Instructions

  • Clean Immediately: Wipe off any stains or dust as soon as you notice them.

  • Start with Gentle Cleaners: Begin with mild cleaning products, such as diluted dish soap or mild soapy water, before using stronger cleaners. Test the cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility.

  • Dry After Cleaning: Always dry the surface after cleaning to prevent water spots and discoloration.

Things to Avoid When Cleaning Stainless Steel

  • Avoid Products with Chlorides or Halides

    • Chloride-containing products are often found in bleach or disinfectants, such as bleach-based cleaners and bathroom cleaners. These can cause staining or corrosion on stainless steel surfaces and should be avoided.

  • Do Not Use Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)

    • Hydrochloric acid, commonly found in cement or limescale removers used in construction, can severely damage and deeply scratch stainless steel surfaces. If you need to clean cement or limescale residue, it’s recommended to use a vinegar and water solution instead.

  • Avoid Silver Cleaners

    • Do not use silver polish or cleaners on stainless steel, as these may contain chemicals that can cause tarnishing or corrosion on stainless steel surfaces.

  • Use Minimal Soap or Dishwashing Liquid

    • Using too much soap or dishwashing liquid may leave a residue on the stainless steel surface. Only a small amount is necessary, and rinse thoroughly after cleaning.

  • Do Not Scrub Stubborn Stains All at Once

    • Begin by removing the majority of the residue with an initial rinse, then gently scrub any remaining stubborn stains to prevent scratching the stainless steel surface.

Cleaning Stains and Marks on Stainless Steel

  • Fingerprints

    • Use a clean cloth dampened with mild soapy water or gentle dishwashing liquid. Wipe gently, rinse with clean water, and dry with a soft cloth to avoid water spots on the surface.

  • Oil and Grease Stains

    • Wash with warm soapy water or a mild dishwashing liquid. Use a cloth dampened with the cleaner to remove the stains, then rinse with clean water and dry. For easier cleaning, soak the item in warm water for a few minutes before washing.

  • Paint and Permanent Marker Stains

    • Use a soft cloth or a nylon brush with a bit of turpentine or paint thinner to gently rub off the stain. Rinse with clean water and dry.

  • Soot and Food Residue

    • Wipe off with dishwashing liquid or a grease cleaner, then rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

  • Heat Discoloration

    • Use a non-metallic scouring pad and stainless steel polish. Rub in the direction of the steel’s grain, rinse with clean water, and dry.

  • Sticker and Label Residue

    • Soak the area in hot water to loosen the adhesive. Peel off the label, then use rubbing alcohol (like medical alcohol) to remove any leftover adhesive. Wash with soapy water and dry.

  • Water Spots and Limescale

    • Use a diluted vinegar solution, mixing vinegar and water in a 1:3 ratio. Let the mixture sit on the stain for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

  • Tea and Coffee Stains

    • Wash with hot water mixed with baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate / NaHCO₃) to help lift the stain. Rinse with soapy water, then rinse again with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

  • Rust Stains

    • Use a stainless steel rust remover available from cleaning supply stores. Apply with a cloth, rub off the stain, rinse with clean water, and dry. Alternatively, soak the rusted area in warm water mixed with diluted nitric acid (9:1 ratio) for about an hour, then rinse with clean water. If needed, apply oxalic acid (C₂H₂O₄) on the rust stain for 20 minutes, then rinse with clean water and dry. If the rust remains, consider using a brush or a polishing tool for additional cleaning.
